Where should you stay in Cancun?

Where you stay can have a surprisingly big impact on how your Cancun holiday turns out. Cancun is not just one long line of hotels. Different parts of the city and coast suit different types of vacations. Here we help you find the area that suits you best.

Hotel Zone – best for first-time visitors

For most people imagining the classic Cancun holiday, the Hotel Zone is the natural choice. Zona Hotelera is a long, narrow strip of land with the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other. Here you'll find:

• many of Cancun's best beaches
• large resorts
• restaurants
• nightlife
• shopping
• tourist attractions

The biggest advantage is the simplicity. You can wake up, walk straight out to the beach and at the same time have access to restaurants and activities without having to be isolated at a resort.

Downsides

The Hotel Zone is tourist-oriented. Restaurants can be significantly more expensive than Downtown, and you won't get the same local feel as you do in the city.

Northern Hotel Zone

The northern part is closer to Downtown and faces partly toward Bahía de Mujeres. Here the water can be calmer than along the long east-facing coast. This can make the area interesting for families with small children.

Punta Cancún – best for nightlife

On the northeastern tip of the Hotel Zone you find Punta Cancún. This is the area for those who want restaurants, shops and Cancun's famous nightlife nearby. It's also an interesting area because the hotels around the point can have access to beaches with quite different conditions. Well suited for:

• adults
• groups of friends
• first-time visitors
• those who want a lot within walking distance

Less ideal for:

• anyone who primarily wants total peace and quiet

Central Hotel Zone

If you continue south along Boulevard Kukulcán, you come to a long series of large beachfront hotels. Here you get the classic Cancun experience: large pool areas, turquoise sea and long sandy beaches. This is a good compromise for both couples and families.

Southern Hotel Zone

In the southern Hotel Zone there are a number of large resorts. You are closer to the airport but further from the nightlife at Punta Cancún and Downtown. This area suits you well if the hotel and the beach are more important than being able to walk to restaurants and nightlife every evening.

Downtown Cancun – best for price and local atmosphere

El Centro is a completely different experience. Many of Cancun's residents live and work here. Hotels are often cheaper and the selection of local restaurants is large. For example, you can stay near Parque de las Palapas and experience a side of Cancun that many resort guests never see. The obvious downside: You are not on the Caribbean beach. You therefore need to travel to the Hotel Zone when you want beach life. Downtown is especially suitable if Cancun is primarily a base for exploring the area and you don't need a large resort.

Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres – best for resort holidays

North of Cancun a large resort area has grown around Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres. Here you'll find several modern luxury and All Inclusive resorts. The area is quieter and less urbanized than the Hotel Zone. This makes it very attractive for:

• families with children
• honeymoons
• couples
• All Inclusive holidays
• travelers who want to spend most of their holiday at the resort

The downside is precisely the location. You cannot in the same way step out of the hotel and have the whole Hotel Zone available. Hotel Zone or Playa Mujeres? Choose the Hotel Zone if you want:

• more life
• more restaurants outside the hotel
• shopping
• easier access to Downtown
• to explore Cancun

Choose Playa Mujeres/Costa Mujeres if you want:

• a modern resort
• a quieter holiday
• All Inclusive
• lots of time at the hotel
• a resort holiday with children

Downtown or Hotel Zone? For a classic first Cancun trip, we would normally choose the Hotel Zone. But the difference in price can be significant. For backpackers, long-term travelers and those who want to use Cancun as a base for exploring the Yucatán, Downtown can be a better buy.

Our advice

Don't choose the hotel first and the area afterwards. Do the opposite. Decide what type of Cancun holiday you want, choose the right area – and then find the best hotel within your budget.
