How do you get around Cancun? Cancun is relatively easy to understand once you know the geography. The main tourist area lies along Boulevard Kukulcán in the Hotel Zone, while Downtown is northwest of the hotel zone. Between these areas you can use, among others:
- bus
- taxi
- private transfer
- rental car
For destinations outside Cancun, the ADO bus is a very useful option.
From Cancun airport to the Hotel Zone
Cancun International Airport – CUN – is located south of the city. Travel time to hotels in Cancun is usually about 20–30 minutes, depending on the hotel and traffic. (Cancun Airport) But the Hotel Zone is long, so some hotels are naturally further away than others.
Private transfer
This is the option we would consider first for:
- families with children
- first-time visitors
- several people
- arrivals late in the evening
You book transport before departure, meet the driver after arrival and are driven directly to the hotel. The main advantage is that everything is arranged.
Taxis from the airport
It's important to know that Cancun Airport operates differently than many European airports. Regular local taxis cannot simply drive up to the terminal and pick up passengers. The airport states that transport from the terminals must be carried out by authorized transport providers. (Cancun Airport) The airport also advises travelers not to accept casual transport offers from people who approach them on arrival. ADO bus from the airport
ADO is the major bus company many tourists encounter on the Yucatán Peninsula. From Cancun Airport, ADO goes to, among others:
- Cancun
- Playa del Carmen
- Tulum
- Mérida
Traditional ADO airport buses go to the bus terminals and not directly to hotels. (Cancun Airport) That makes ADO especially interesting if you:
- are going to Downtown
- are continuing to Playa del Carmen
- are continuing to Tulum
- are traveling alone and want to keep costs down
Newer connection to the Hotel Zone
In 2025, an ADO route from the airport through the Hotel Zone to Plaza Fiesta was also announced, making public transport from the airport more interesting than before. Timetables and stops should, however, always be checked again before publication/travel, since such services can change. Buses in the Hotel Zone
For ordinary sightseeing, local buses are one of the easiest ways to move along Boulevard Kukulcán. For tourists this is especially useful between:
- Hotel Zone
- Punta Cancún
- the beaches
- shopping areas
- Downtown

Taxis in Cancun
Taxis are readily available in the tourist areas. But the price level can vary. Our advice is therefore: Clarify the price before the trip if no meter or fixed price is used. Hotel reception can also often help with price information.
Uber and other apps
This is an area we should keep as an ongoing updated page, because regulation, availability and practice can change. Instead of building a permanent claim into the main article I would create:

Car rental
Do you need a car in Cancun? For the Hotel Zone itself: Usually not. But a rental car can be useful if you plan a road trip including:
- Valladolid
- cenotes
- Chichén Itzá
- Riviera Maya
Cancun Airport has a large selection of car rental companies. (Cancun Airport) Remember to compare the total price including necessary insurance, not just the very low base price that is sometimes marketed.
To Isla Mujeres
You need a ferry here. There are ferry connections from the Cancun area to Isla Mujeres. We should create a separate:

Cancun to Playa del Carmen
One of the easiest longer routes. Options include, among others:
- ADO
- private transfer
- car rental
Cancun Airport states about 50–60 minutes to Playa del Carmen from the airport, depending on traffic. (Cancun Airport)
Cancun to Tulum
This is significantly longer. Airport information states around 1.5 hours to Tulum, but the actual time may vary with traffic and where in Tulum you're heading. (Cancun Airport)
Cancun to Chichén Itzá
Here we would consider three main options:

bus
For first-time visitors an organized tour can be the simplest, while a car gives greater flexibility to combine the ruins, Valladolid and a cenote. Do you need a car on a Cancun holiday? For most people: No. If you stay in the Hotel Zone and plan organized excursions, you can easily complete the entire holiday without a rental car. That is one of the advantages of Cancun.
Our recommendation from the airport
For a family coming from Norway after a long flight we would normally choose: pre-booked private transfer directly to the hotel. For one or two adults traveling on a budget: check ADO. That gives us 14 foundational articles in place now.
