Cancun has some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches
It’s only when you stand on the beach that you truly understand why Cancun became one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. The sea can have an almost unnaturally turquoise color, while the pale sand stretches for miles along the Hotel Zone. But Cancun’s beaches are different. Some are perfect for small children. Others have big waves and fantastic views. Some have restaurants and activities around them, while others feel more open and peaceful. Here is our overview.
Playa Delfines – best for views and classic Cancun
Playa Delfines is perhaps Cancun’s most famous public beach. Here you get:
- wide sandy beach
- fantastic views
- turquoise sea
- fewer large hotel buildings directly on the beach
- the famous Cancun sign
The beach is public and easily accessible. But be aware that the waves and currents can be strong.

- With small children
- assess conditions the same day.
Playa Langosta – a good choice with children
Playa Langosta is located on the more sheltered northern part of the Hotel Zone. The water can be calmer than on the east-facing beaches. That makes the beach interesting for families with children. Best for: families with small children and calmer swimming.
Playa Tortugas – activity and central location
Playa Tortugas is smaller than Playa Delfines, but has more activity around it. Here you will find, among other things, connections to Isla Mujeres. That makes the area lively and convenient. Best for: families, activities and combining with a boat trip.
Playa Caracol
A smaller and more sheltered beach at Punta Cancún. It can be an interesting alternative if you want calmer water and easy access from the northern part of the Hotel Zone. Best for: families and calmer swimming.
Playa Forum
Located in the heart of the lively area around Punta Cancún. Here you are close to restaurants, beach clubs and nightlife. This is not necessarily the beach we would choose for a quiet day with small children. Best for: young adults, nightlife and central location.
Playa Gaviota Azul
A popular beach in the Punta Cancún area. Turquoise water and a central location make it attractive, but it can be busy.
Playa Marlin
A large beach on the eastern side of the Hotel Zone. Here you get the classic Cancun view with a wide sandy beach and the Caribbean Sea. As on several east-facing beaches, you must be aware of waves and currents.
Playa Ballenas
Another great beach in the central/southern part of the Hotel Zone. It is less known among first-time visitors than Playa Delfines, but can be a good alternative. Which beach is best with children? We would first consider:

Playa Tortugas
The reason is primarily their more sheltered locations. But sea conditions change, and the flags on the beach should always be respected. Which beach is the most beautiful? If the goal is primarily the classic Cancun experience: Playa Delfines. Here you get one of the finest panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. Are the beaches public? Beaches in Mexico are public, but access can in some areas be via specific public entrances between the hotels. That makes it important to know where the official beach access points are located. In the long term the Cancun.no map should show all public beach access points. That would be extremely useful. What do the beach flags mean? Always follow the flags and information from the lifeguards. As a general rule the flag system indicates how safe it is to swim, but local signs and instructions on site should always take priority. Do not assume the water is safe just because it looks calm.
Seaweed and sargassum
Sargassum can affect the beaches in Cancun. The amount varies greatly with:
- season
- weather
- wind
- ocean currents
- which side of the coast the beach is on

Do not judge a hotel’s beach from one perfect marketing photo. Check:
- which direction the beach faces
- wave conditions
- width of the beach
- sargassum
- how the beach actually looks throughout the year
This is especially important if the beach is the main reason you are traveling to Cancun.
