Cancun is one of the world’s most famous Spring Break destinations. Every spring large numbers of American and Canadian students travel south to combine beach holidays with parties and nightlife. But does that mean families should avoid Cancun for the whole of March? No. The most important thing is to understand when, where and at which hotels Spring Break is actually noticeable. When is Spring Break? There is no single common Spring Break week in the USA. Universities and schools have holidays at different times. That means Cancun usually gets a longer period of Spring Break travelers, with a concentration through parts of March and into April. This also means that some weeks can be significantly more intense than others. Cancun.no should therefore publish an updated Spring Break calendar each year. Example:

based on the holiday schedules of major American universities. It can become a very useful resource. Where is Spring Break most noticeable? Primarily around:
Punta Cancún
This is the heart of Cancun’s nightlife. Here several clubs and bars are clustered closely.
Party-oriented hotels
Some hotels are actively marketed to young adults and Spring Break travelers. Others have nearly the opposite target group. That is why hotel choice is more important than the month itself. Is the entire Hotel Zone full of partying? No. The Hotel Zone is long. You can stay many kilometers from the nightlife at Punta Cancún at a family-oriented resort where Spring Break hardly affects the holiday. It is therefore too simple to say:
"Don’t travel to Cancun in March with children."
A better piece of advice is:
"Choose the right area and the right hotel."
Cancun with children during Spring Break
We would not automatically avoid Cancun. But we would examine the hotel carefully. Look for:
- stated family profile
- Kids Club
- water park
- reviews from families
- distance to Punta Cancún
- whether the hotel has Spring Break restrictions
- adults-only vs family
Large family resorts away from the center of the nightlife can feel completely different.
Prices
Spring Break can increase demand for:
- hotels
- flights
- popular activities
- nightlife
It is therefore not necessarily a cheap period even though American students are traditionally associated with budget travel.
Nightlife
For the right target group this is naturally part of the point. The area around Punta Cancún has several of Cancun’s largest nightclubs and bars. During Spring Break the activity becomes even higher. If this is what you want: stay centrally. If this is what you want to avoid: don’t stay here.
Alcohol and safety
The Spring Break period involves more alcohol, larger crowds and more nightlife. As elsewhere, the usual safety advice applies:
- keep an eye on your drink
- don’t walk alone in unfamiliar areas late at night
- use safe transport
- avoid drugs
- watch your valuables
What about February? Spring Break traffic can begin towards the end of February, but March is usually the clearly most important period. Early February is therefore an interesting alternative if you want winter weather in Cancun without the biggest Spring Break activity. What about Easter? Easter can create another type of high traffic. Mexico also has domestic holidays and travel activity around Semana Santa. That means some beaches and destinations can become very busy even after the American Spring Break peak has subsided.
Our recommendation to families
If you have flexibility: late January to mid-February is, in our opinion, an easier choice than mid-March. But if you find the perfect family hotel and good flight prices in March, we would not write off Cancun. We would just choose the hotel much more deliberately.
